We take the road hassle out of getting to some of the far flung, but best spots, give you wicked route notes based on our personal expience, and let you get on with having a good time at your own pace.

Please yourself and makeup your own schedule - we can offer you 3 different self guided trip options.

  • 1. Bobs Cove

Let Vertigo drop you at Bobs Cove, approximately 15km from Queenstown.  Here you can experience a great scenic bike ride along the lake edge and through regenerating native scrub and Gum trees on mostly easy well graded double track. Then you have the option of taking the road back to town or tackling the more technical purpose built mountain bike trails in 7-Mile reserve.

Technical Rating:                       Intermediate
Fitness Rating:                           Moderate
Distance:                                  15km

  • 2. Moonlight Track Moke Lake

This classic Queenstown mountain bike ride is a favourite with the locals as it encompasses a bit of everything - it's a great workout, has beautiful scenery and even has a bit of a technical challenge in sections.

Let Vertigo Bikes drop you at Moke Lake saddle, approximately 8km from Queenstown.  From here you follow a well-graded and undulating 4wd track through some beautiful back country.  The ride will take you through an area rich in gold mining history, from old settlements to sluiced landscapes.  Although considered quite a scenic ride there is a heart-pounding section of single track that leads you to Arthurs Point that will challenge even the most seasoned rider in places.

Technical Rating:           Intermediate
Fitness Rating:              High level of fitness required
Distance:                      18km

  • 3. Jacks Point

Let Vertigo drop you off at the start of the Kelvin Heights track, approximately 12km from Queenstown.

From here you can ride by far the most popular all-abilities mountain bike ride in town.  With a mixture of purpose built single and double track, this is a great ride for all abilities and fitness levels as the track remains mildly undulating for the duration of the ride.  Follow the track out to Jacks Point, or as far as your fitness will take you and simply turn round and come back the way you came, it is that easy!

Technical Rating:                       Beginner/Intermediate
Fitness Rating:                           Moderate
Distance:                                  28km

What Should I Take?

Vertigo will give you everything you need in terms of equipment for you to enjoy your ride including:

  • A top quality and well maintained mountain bike
  • A Helmet
  • A tool kit including a multi-tool; spare inner tube and pump (just in case!)

Vertigo also recommends you bring a few of the following things for your ride:

  • Sunscreen, the central Otago sun needs no introduction, its strong and dangerous, so always wear plenty of protection
  • Plenty of water for your trip, those warm summer days can have you dehydrated in no time, so you need lots of hydration, most of the bikes come equipped with water bottle cages.
  • Food, make sure you bring enough snacks so as to ensure you don't run out of energy half way through your ride, we recommend a One Square Meal bar at a minimum!
  • Clothing, it always helps to be prepared, we are in the mountains and weather can change very quickly, so if it is looking ominous then take a jacket or something warm.
